Tightly plotted, ironic, formally exact: dialogue that closes like a trap, each line pulling the protagonist further into a truth the audience already sees.
Sophocles was born to wealth outside Athens, served as a treasurer and general alongside Pericles, and by most ancient accounts died content and honored at ninety, a rare peaceful ending among the tragedians. He wrote around 120 plays and won more dramatic competitions than any rival, including Aeschylus and Euripides combined.
He is credited with adding a third actor to the stage and expanding the chorus, technical changes that let tragedy carry more plot and psychological weight. Oedipus Rex, part of an informal Theban cycle with Antigone, structures its entire horror as a detective story turned inside out: the king investigating a murder is the murderer.
Aristotle later used Oedipus Rex as his central example of tragic form in the Poetics, cementing Sophocles as the genre's technical benchmark for every century since.
