Rose Tremain
England
Clear, socially attentive prose that follows outsiders and migrants adapting, often at cost, to a country that only half wants them.
Tremain was born in London and became one of only five women named to Granta's original 1983 'Best of Young British Novelists' list, a generation that also included Ian McEwan and Martin Amis.
Her earlier novel Restoration, a Booker-shortlisted account of a physician's fall from grace at the court of Charles II, was later filmed with Robert Downey Jr.; Music & Silence won the Whitbread Novel Award. The Road Home (2007), tracking an Eastern European migrant's precarious new life in London, won the Orange Prize.
She has taught creative writing and served as Chancellor of the University of East Anglia, and lives in Norfolk with the biographer Richard Holmes.
